During the recruitment of the National Guard, the events in Vas County revealed the anti-Jewish attitude of the urban, market town and rural population. Its focal point was in Szombathely, but spread to Kőszeg, Körmend and Rábahidvég as well.Already on 10 April, the National Provisional Committee of Ministers (MOIB) appointed József Széll and László Csányi as government commissioners. The powers of the commissioners, who were granted full authority, extended mainly to Vas County, but also the counties of Zala, Veszprém and Sopron, as well as to the towns of Sopron, Kőszeg, and Ruszt, should it be deemed necessary. The legal arguments of the government commissioners were backed up by an adequate number of soldiers, and order was restored in Vas.
