Abstract

The first census of the Franciscan provinces, which already lists the names of their custody and monasteries in addition to the names of the individual provinces, was drawn up at around 1340 by Bishop Paolino Veneto of Pozzuoli. The register mentions 8 custody and a total of 45 monasteries in the Hungarian order, and although the list is not complete, it provides a comprehensive picture of the organization of the Hungarian province in the 14th century. The first mention of several Hungarian monasteries is known from this very compilation. The study examines the Hungarian relevance of the source, highlighting its most crucial points, while at the same time evaluating the scholarly literature on the subject, which is still considered authoritative.
