Members of the Jewish community in Tatabánya on the road to assimilation

Through the history of the Jewish community living in the villages of Alsógalla, Bánhida, Felsőgalla and Tatabánya, which belonged to the Esterházy estate of Tata, the paper aims to capture the process of modernisation, civilisation and assimilation in a region that underwent significant economic transformation in the second half of the 19th century, following the emergence of coal mining. By examining the role of Jews in local society and the relationship between the Jewish and non-Jewish populations, the factors that contributed to the social integration of the Israelite population were identified together with the milestones associated with the various stages of assimilation.
