Abstract

Josephus/ József Kosdi can be considered the last Student from Hungary who enrolled officially (1794) at Franeker University. The last one also of more than 1.200 Hungarian and Transylvanian Students, visiting Franeker since the start of the University in 1585. Unfortunately in 1811 the University had to close its gates on the authority of the French Emperor Napoleon, the Ruler of the Netherlands at that time. That this fact remained unknown in Hungary is evident from a letter, in December 1856 sent by the Hungarian Reformed Deputy Bishop Gabriel/ Gábor Báthory junior to the Professors of the Faculty of Theology (Facultas Theologica) in Franeker. In this letter Báthory is asking if there are still study opportunities at the Faculty for Students from Hungary, specifically, if there are any Stipendia still available for them.
