Pázmány’s Polemical Writings in Hungarian Literary Historiography

Abstract

Polemical works constitute a substantial part of Péter Pázmány’s oeuvre. His activity as a religious controversialist is of exceptional importance in the literature of the Baroque period: the polemical writings form clusters of religious controversy, with several works produced, in almost every case, both by Pázmány and by his opponent(s) on a given issue. Scholarly work on Pázmány’s oeuvre began to gain renewed momentum in the last third of the 20th century. The need for this reception-historical study is further justified by the fact that, over the past twenty years, the number of scholarly works on Pázmány has doubled, chiefly as a result of the publication of the critical edition series.
