The period discussed in the present paper is often referred to in historiography as the era of Christian-national Hungary, derived from the ideological self-definition of the time. Based on this, one could suppose that the government’s (particularly Klebelsberg’s) relationship with the churches, especially the Catholic church, would be unproblematic. However, in the following pages we argue this was not truly the case, as demonstrated by the complications around the appointment of the highest Catholic clerical office of the country. Then again, this series of conflicts also presents the major directions, aims, and powers in the Klebelsberg-ian ecclesiastic and cultural politics.
