Treaty of Vienna, regulation of religious practice

Abstract

The treaty that played a key role in the regulation of religious practice in Hungary, and which was signed as the result of negotiations between the rebels led by István Bocskai and the Habsburg government in 1605–1606, is still only known from the sources published by Árpád Károlyi and through his narrative. This resource was based on the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of the 19th century. The re-reading of the authentic sources, and the inclusion of some new ones in the research, has led to new findings that allow for a different possible interpretation of the events. This implies a much greater and more positive role for the Hungarian Council and Ferenc Forgách in particular in shaping events.
